Even the bus stops help to protect Bourgas as town of lakes

They are decorated with images of Eurasian Spoonbills, Pied Avocets, Black-winged stilts, Ferruginous ducks and many other winged inhabitants of the lakes as well as impressive sceneries form Vaya, Atanassovsko Lake and protected area “Poda”.

BSPB shared experience and innovatory practices in wetland management with Bulgarian experts

The team of project “Life for the Bourgas Lakes” funded by EU LIFE+ program and implemented by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds shared its experience in management of Bourgas wetlands with experts from all over the country. The team welcomed the Representatives of Ministry of Environment and Waters (MOEW) and its territorial structures as well as of Natural Park “Persina” at protected area “Poda” and managed reserve “Atanassovsko Lake” near Bourgas. During their visit they witnessed the implementation of some of the activities for the recovery and improvement of the wetlands.

Protected bird species died in poachers’ nets in Vaya Lake

Protected bird species died in poachers’ nets in Vaya Lake. A whole family of Little Grebes – adult bird with two youngsters, found their dead in illegal fishing nets in waters of the lake. This was established by experts of Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) who were alarmed by employees of Executive Agency for Fisheries and Aquaculture (EAFA) during the regular check up for illegal fishing in Bourgas Lakes.

Predator control system at Atanassovsko Lake was improved at the beginning of the breeding season this year by experts of Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and workers of Chernomorski Solnitsi AD – Bourgas. This is only one of the efforts made by BSPB to diminish the damages caused by homeless dogs, cats and jackals to the ground nesting birds at Atanassovsko Lake.

Students take part in the monitoring of the Bourgas Lakes

Students take part in the monitoring of the Bourgas Lakes implemented by the Boulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. The children are the winners in the Bird Competition that was organized at the beginning of June. Since then the young people participated in the monitoring three times. The experts think that the five children show big interest in birds and they successfully use their knowledge in practice.

The presentation will show basic and easy ways for catching snakes as the firemen received many signals about snakes inhabiting settlements.

Ramsar Secretariat endorsed the update of the National Action Plan for Wetlands in Bulgaria

Ramsar Secretariat published on its web site news about the updated National Action Plan for Wetlands in Bulgaria developed by Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and Bulgarian society for the Protection of Birds. The updating of the information of the National Action Plan which was prepared in 1995 became possible due to the project “LIFE for the Bourgas Lakes” implemented by BSPB and financed under EU LIFE+ program.

„Let’s protect the Bourgas Lakes” – a story of birds, dogs, jackals and people

On Friday on the stage of House of petrochemists exactly at 18:00 will land Pelican, Pied Avocet, Eurasian Spoonbill, Common Stilt, Sparrow and many other birds inhabiting the Bourgas Lakes. They will tell you about their troubles in the lakes while looking for food, breeding or resting. The little actors from “Talantino” theater and the dancers from studio “Dune” will play the roles of the birds from the wetlands around Bourgas.

„Here are the swallows”……. This is the beginning of the story about the lakes. The story is a special gift to Bourgas citizens made by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. It goes on like this: “But the swallows are not the only birds that return here in spring…” The story retells about all the troubles caused to birds by people on the territory of the Bourgas Lakes. The pollution, poaching and the attacks of dogs and jackals cause great inconvenience to our flying friends.
