The winter will bring more geese at Bourgas Lakes

At the end of 2012 the low temperatures and the snowy weather at North brought more geese at Bourgas Lakes. During the last weekend of the year volunteers of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and Bulgarian Ornithological Center investigated how has changed the number of the winter inhabitants of the lakes. The collected data point out that for ten days the number of the Greater White-fronted Goose increased to one hundred thousand. In the middle of December their number was approximately 20 000 and at the end of the month over 120000 spent the nights at Vaya Lake, Atanassovsko Lake and Mandra.

Great White Pelican Phillip welcomes its mates First Great White Pelicans returned to Bourgas Lakes

On 13th March 2012 the Great White Pelican Phillip that lived for two months at Nature Conservation center “Poda” finally welcomed its mates returning to Bourgas Lakes. Now the chances of Phillip to fly away with them increased immensely. The return from Africa of the Great White Pelicans in our country means that the spring is coming soon. The first birds from the species feed at Bourgas Lakes on their way to the Danube delta.

Meet Spring Alive together with 38 countries

On 1st of March starts the seventh edition of the educational campaign Spring Alive organized by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds [BSPB] and the International Nature Conservation Center BirdLife International.
The idea of the initiative Spring Alive is to meet the spring together with the birds returning from the South and thus to become part of the biggest spring bird watching in Europe. How does it happen? Everyone who wants to participate should look at the sky and meet the migrating birds. After that the participant should share the observation on the official site of the campaign www.springalive.net. The main rule is to register only the first observations of five migrating bird species: White Stork, Barn Swallow, Common Swift, Common Cuckoo and European Bee-eater. Last year on the internet site of Spring Alive were registered over 127 000 observations.

Birds threatened with extinction in nature were temporary patients in Nature Conservation Center “Poda”

Birds threatened with extinction in nature were temporary patients in the rehabilitation bird cage at Nature Conservation “Poda”, owned by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds. For less than a month at the Nature Conservation Center has been provided first aid to 35 birds. Most of them were saved by citizens, Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water and volunteers working on LIFE+ project “Life for the Bourgas Lakes.

Barnacle Goose – a rare guest to our country observed at Bourgas Lakes

Barnacle Goose was observed among a nock of Greater White-fronted Geese in the region of the Bourgas Lakes. The only representative of the species which could be seen in Northern Europe and rarely in our country, was recognized among more than 1 000 Greater White-fronted Geese. The observation was made while the birds were feeding in a field near Bourgas Lake. Barnacle Geese inhabit open areas, usually very close to Northern sea costs far away from Bulgaria.

Birds in the hold of the cold winter

„During the last 2-3 weeks we have witnessed severe scenes. Swans and other water birds are stuck in the frozen water basins without a chance to get out. Although this is a normal situation in nature, the destiny of the swans attracted the attention and the compassion of many people”, said Lubomila Krivoshieva, expert at Wildlife Rehabilitation and Breeding Center – Green Balkans in Stara Zagora.

The colors of Bourgas lakes “visit” the Regional Administration of Bourgas

Hand painted shawls and batiks will bring the colors of the Bourgas Lakes to the office of the Regional Administration of Bourgas. Charity exhibition – bazaar “The colors of our lakes” will be opened on 2nd February (Thursday) 2012 at 11:00 am at the office of Regional Administration of Bourgas. The event is dedicated to 2nd February - World Wetlands Day. It is organized by Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (LIFE+ project “Life for the Boirgas Lakes) and Regional Administration of Bourgas.

One hundred thousand birds less spend the winter in the water basins of Bourgas region

100 000 birds less spent the winter in the water of the Bourgas Lakes and the water basins in the region of Southern Black Sea Cost in comparison with last year. This shows the results from the Mid-winter counting of wintering water birds that took place between 13th and 15th of January. Almost 70 000 representatives from different species were registered by experts and volunteers from Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds, Association “Green Balkans” and Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water – Bourgas. Last year 172 000 water birds feed at the water basins. Traditionally the birds prefer Vaya Lake and Mandra reservoir. Bourgas Lake is populated by Common Pochards and Northern Shoveller, as well as by 100 000 Pygmy Cormorants. There were observed also 61 White-headed Ducks. The number of this species decreases in the whole world, but each winter hundreds of them visit Vaya Lake.

Over 30 employees and volunteers of BSPB and RIEW – Bourgas will count wintering water birds in the region

For twenty second time ornithologists from Bulgarian Society for the protection of Birds (BSPB), Federation of Nature-conservation NGOs „Green Balkans” and experts form Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters – Bourgas (RIEW) will participate in Mid-winter counting of wintering birds between 13th and 15th of January. Counting of wintering birds will take place at the same time in most European countries.
