Predator control system at Atanassovsko Lake was improved at the beginning of the breeding season this year 07/23/2013

Predator control system at Atanassovsko Lake was improved at the beginning of the breeding season this year by experts of Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and workers of Chernomorski Solnitsi AD – Bourgas. This is only one of the efforts made by BSPB to diminish the damages caused by homeless dogs, cats and jackals to the ground nesting birds at Atanassovsko Lake.
Three years ago were placed two electric fences on two of the biggest dykes in the area. Their purpose is to protect rare and endangered bird species in the shallow lagoon for the attacks of small predators. The electric fences are widely used in our country and around the world as harmful barrier for many mammal species. The control system at Atanassoavsk Lake is unique as for the first time such electric fences are used for the protection of Common Stilts, Pied Avocets, Terns and other bird species form the attacks of homeless dogs, cats and jackals.
The experience point out that usage of electric fences in water basins with inconstant water level has its disadvantages. When the water level is high they remain under water and stop functioning. And vice versa, when the water level is low, the predators just pass around them.
This spring BSPB under project “LIFE for the Bourgas Lakes” funded by EU LIFE+ program, placed additional net that will make passing through the electric fences more difficult. The net is placed 4-5 meters in the water and even the water level of Atanassovsko Lake is low, the predators could not pass around it. BSPB experts monitor the effectiveness of the innovation and made the conclusion that dogs, Jackals and small predators could not pass the electric fences. The monitoring of the new control system will continue in winter in order to evaluate its effectiveness during the cold season.
