Ramsar Secretariat endorsed the update of the National Action Plan for Wetlands in Bulgaria 07/03/2013

Ramsar Secretariat published on its web site news about the updated National Action Plan for Wetlands in Bulgaria developed by Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation and Bulgarian society for the Protection of Birds. The updating of the information of the National Action Plan which was prepared in 1995 became possible due to the project “LIFE for the Bourgas Lakes” implemented by BSPB and financed under EU LIFE+ program.
An entirely new procedure for gathering baseline information, studying and planning, was developed in 2010. The updating of the document used as a key instrument for management of wetlands was a long process. Today we have much better Plan than previous. Its overall goal is to provide the basis for adequate planning and implementation of conservation and sustainable management of Bulgaria's most significant wetlands. The plan describes 25 more areas that meet some of the criteria of the strategic document.
The specific objectives of the plan are to:
• update the information on the current state of Bulgaria's wetlands of priority importance, including their significance for nature conservation and their main characteristics;
• evaluate the threats to wetlands as ecosystems and to individual typical species and habitats;
• review the conservation measures taken so far;
• identify the required wetland conservation measures as well as the means to implement them.
